harbourfront kayak lesson
A little more than a week ago, I made my way to Harbourfront to properly learn how to kayak. I was in a class with about 5 other people for a few hours. Our instructor, Michael, was a great teacher and one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.
We learned the proper paddling techniques for moving forward, reverse, and sideways. He also showed us how to hold someone else’s kayak to be stable so that they could stand up on it. We all tried this which was very nerve wrecking but also so exciting. Another lesson was how to use our paddles to turn the kayak around. This was confusing at first but it became one of the highlights of the day for me. After I got the hang of it, I was just spinning myself around and around in circles. I also really appreciated finally learning how to steer effectively because it was my worst issue the first time.
We were taught more skills that day but these ones stood out to me. I’m sure I’ll eventually use all of them as I spend more time on the water. August is going to be a busy month but I’ll do my best to schedule at least one day for kayaking.
